East Coast

Tasmania’s East Coast runs from Orford in the south to St Helens in the north — a ribbon of beaches, oyster leases and vineyards set against the Freycinet granites. The region’s wineries concentrate around Swansea, Cranbrook and the Apslawn flats, where cool-climate Pinot Noir, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc thrive on the Freycinet-facing slopes. Devil’s Corner, Freycinet Vineyard and Spring Vale are the best-known addresses, with smaller producers like Milton and Gala Estate rewarding anyone who detours off the highway. Cellar doors here often share carparks with oyster farms and seafood shacks — ideal one-day pairings. The drive from Hobart to St Helens takes a leisurely weekend, with Wineglass Bay and the Bay of Fires as natural bookends.
