North West

Tasmania’s North West runs from Deloraine through Devonport, Burnie, Wynyard and Stanley — rich volcanic-red soils, reliable rainfall and dairy country that once drove much of the island’s primary production. Drink-producers here are more spread out than elsewhere in Tasmania but reward the drive: Hellyers Road near Burnie is one of Australia’s largest single-malt distilleries, Lost Pippin and Seven Sheds produce in the Meander Valley, and Ghost Rock, Barringwood and Leven Valley lead the winery offering around Sassafras, Port Sorell and the Leven. The Spirit of Tasmania docks at Devonport, so North West venues often catch visitors on their first afternoon on-island or their last morning. Pair a cellar-door loop with Cradle Mountain, Table Cape and the Bass Strait coastline for a self-contained three-day itinerary.
