Cradle Coast

The Cradle Coast stretches from Deloraine on the edge of the Central Highlands through Devonport, Burnie, Wynyard and Stanley and out to the wilderness country that surrounds Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. It covers Tasmania’s northern and western coast plus the forested interior beyond, and is the region’s official tourism umbrella for everything west of the Tamar and north of Strahan. Cellar doors here are more spread out than elsewhere, but reward the drive: Hellyers Road near Burnie is one of Australia’s largest single-malt distilleries, Lost Pippin and Seven Sheds produce in the Meander Valley, and Ghost Rock, Barringwood and Leven Valley lead the winery offering around Sassafras, Port Sorell and the Leven. The Spirit of Tasmania docks at Devonport, so Cradle Coast venues often catch visitors on their first afternoon on-island or their last morning. Pair a cellar-door loop with Cradle Mountain, Table Cape and the Bass Strait coastline for a self-contained three-day itinerary.
